He is not fastest nor the most ferocious, but Mr. Nobody makes up for it by being the sort of comic relief in the Fast and Furious franchise. Kurt Russell has expressed his interest in reprising his role as Mr. Nobody in the untitled ninth installment of Fast and Furious.
His role was first introduced back in 2013 with the Furious 7 release, and he came back in the latest sequel, The Fate of the Furious. This was a surprise because he is not one for sequels. Screenrant was able to talk to Russell while he was discussing his new movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He stated:
Well, all my life I’ve never been one for sequels and stuff. I’ve done it one time with Escape From LA, which was from Escape From New York, which was 17 years earlier. But we live in a different time now. We live in a time where that’s the norm. I’ve never had anything against it, I just think that each time what I think they’ve learned now, is that you can’t just throw a sequel out there because you did good business. You have to go after it to make it even better. It puts more pressure on you. That, I like! That, I think, is a challenge, and every time you look at what it is, and if you like it and you think you’ve got a reason to do it, you do it. If there’s not you don’t. (Screenrant Interview)
I agree with Russell when he says, “you can’t just throw a sequel out there because you did good business”. There have been movies I have seen in the past few years that have sequels, and none of them really deserved it. They were fine with a one-and-done movie, not a trilogy or anything else. It seems that every time a new, original movie is released, there is always another one within the next few years. I know many, many, many people would like this franchise to end.
If you’re a Kurt Russell fan, like me, then this is great news even though nothing has been confirmed. We will also be seeing him in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Ego the Living Planet which will be released on May 5, 2017. Exciting times are just around the corner!
